NVidia has released new drivers. I've made a new tutorial for these
drivers, co$
screenshots. This is my first distro-neutral tutorial, tested on Debian
Sid and$
In other news, I've taken over the NWN Linux Users Guild, and I am an admin for$ as well. I'm keeping busy, that's for sure. 25/Mar/2003
The big news of the day is the new release of Mandrake 9.1! I urge everyone to order
your copy from Mandrake directly, join the Mandrake Club, or go get a boxed set at your
local retailer when they arrive in stores. Support Mandrake, or else this may be the last
release they make.
In other news, Neverwinter Nights finally came out! And it's working great for me! I've filed three bug reports so far, a total of 4 bugs and 4 wishes. Hehe. I added a new Article today, the Neverwinter Nights Linux FAQ. I hope it is helpful. Also, I updated my wish list and game list articles, as well as the donor page. 6/Mar/2003
Wow. Long time, no update, eh? Well, let me tell you what I've been doing.
First and foremost, I have switched to Debian. That's right. You probably are wondering what will become of this page now that I don't use Mandrake. Well, the good news is that my wife refuses to use anything else, so I can still write tutorials on her computer. The only real difference will be that my tutorials will all have information for both Mandrake and Debian, which means they will apply to a wider variety of people. Today is strictly a news update. I plan to do more stuff on the site soon, as I am pretty much done college tomorrow. I'm probably failed in calculus, so I probably have to go back for a rewrite of the exam, but other than that, and possibly another class or two, I am done. I'll have some free time, hopefully, in between looking for a job and moving, and so I should do some work here. I've found out a few statistics about Linux games that just piss me right off. Firstly, after all they've went through, less than 1% of online gamers playing UT2003 are running Linux. It's no wonder that they didn't give two shits about the dozen people who whined about not getting Unreal 2 ported. The second, and perhaps more shocking, statistic is that Rune has sold UNDER 1000 copies. This game was ported a while ago by Loki, and the game is still available at Tux Games, among other places. This is one of the best games that runs on Linux, and yet it has not sold more than 1K copies? WHY? Either there are fewer Linux gamers than one thinks, or they are all too cheap to pay for software... How many WineX users are out there? I've heard around 4000. That's really stupid. We need native sales to increase. It makes me wonder if there are people playing the Windows version of Rune in WineX. You gotta hand it to Michael Robertson of Lindows... Sounds like Microsoft may get their own lawsuits slapped back in their face. Let's hope it works. I don't like Lindows at all, but Michael gets an A+ for balls in my book. If you have extra cash kicking around, I say you send a donation in to Ryan Gordon. He does so much for Linux gaming, and all out of his own good heart. He's not the only one, but he sure does stick out in my mind. I'm drooling over the screenshots of Medal of Honor, and I can't wait for him to finish it. Oh, and also, pyDDR is great! Go buy some dance mats and get down with your bad self. 17/Jan/2003
Happy new year and all that.
Time for my news. First of all, if you found this site, congrats. As you know, the old server has just disappeared without a trace. Well, that's not entirely true, but it sure seems that way. I suppose most have forgotten about my site, but oh well. Those who found the old one useful will find their way back to me, I suppose. Secondly, I have been working a lot on my school project, and I made a game for it. The game isn't that great, and has surprisingly high system requirements for what it is. If you're interested, it's currently on SourceForge.net, but will be moved to Icculus.org soon (look for Battle Pong). Yes, I finally got an Icculus.org account. It's a great privilege and an honour to be among the ranks of these guys. I won't name names, because I think they're all really great people, at least as far as I can tell over IRC. This site is now mirrored on my homepage space from Icculus.org, if you didn't notice. Keep the URL bookmarked so that you can find it! The old server, when it comes back online, will be updated to this new version. Notice the new design too. I'll post screenshots of how the site has evolved over the first 14 months at a later date. Currently the Icculus.org mirror doesn't have the RPMs up, so don't be alarmed if the links are broken. I'll fix them later. To those of you who want to donate to me, the coolest way to do it is to buy Linux games from TuxGames and use me as your referrer. You can do this with any TuxGames link on my site. When you do this, I'll automatically get 5% of whatever you spend. It's a neat thing that TuxGames does, and I really want to direct as much business to them as I can. Get counted -- where it really matters! Mandrake's filing for the French equivalent of Chapter 11 bankruptcy isn't really worrying me. In the event that Mandrake ceases, this site will become either a general Linux help site, or a Debian help site, or something similar. But most people are currently optimistic about their situation. Quick final news: I may be getting a Palm Pilot soon, so look for a tutorial for that, if I feel there is anything to actually tutor anyone for; a text-only version of this site will come someday when I get time; I've got a bit of work to finish on the games section of the website, such as the screenshot links that aren't really links; I've gotta get rid of the targeting for my links; and the Spanish version of the website is totally gone for now, as the translation team has not been responding to my emails and I have made some changes to some of the tutorials; I'm considering just having the tutorials translated to various languages (from whoever offers and is willing to keep them updated) all accessible from the English version of the site, but I have yet to decide. That was a lot of reading. If you got this far, email me, I'd love to hear your comments. And I'll congratulate you for your endurance of my whining. 11/Dec/2002
Well, I've been busy working on a new site design, because of the eerie similarities between
my site and the Desktop Mandrake website. As much as I don't appreciate being ripped off,
it was time for a new design anyhow.
It is also neat to see that my wife's entry won the competition over at linuxgames.co.uk. The sad thing about it is that I thought my entry was funnier: "That's a very nice egg." "Thank you." Oh well, the new update, and most likely final update until I upload the new design is the newest release of the NVidia driver. Enjoy! 27/Nov/2002
Thanks to the MdkTrans-es group, there is a Spanish translation of this website is now online!
Note that I don't know Spanish at all, so if you try and contact me, try to use English! :)
I hope this new portion of the site is beneficial to lots of Mandrake users!
(What a way to celebrate the Mandrake eXPerience's First Birthday!) 24/Nov/2002
No new tutorials today, but I added some new quotes, as well as some fixes to some tutorials.
Most notably, the Quake tutorial has a new RPM now, and it works with Mandrake 9.0.
There is a major new addition to this site just around the corner that will benefit a number of people. I'll be adding it as soon as I can, but in the meantime, I probably won't update any more tutorials. There's a good reason for it. You'll see. :) 10/Nov/2002
Today I added a total of FIVE NEW TUTORIALS! Some of these were requested many times by
email, so here they are! I also updated some older tutorials, as well as my distro experience page.
3/Nov/2002
Well, I added two new main pages, one of which I've been meaning to add for a LONG time.
That would be the quotes page. Read them when you have time, some are interesting. The other
is the Donations page. It's a tribute to those of you who treasure my help, and I just wanted
to say thank you. Also, for my friends and family, view my Wish List
from my Articles page. More tutorials are on the way soon, I hope, including a TwinView tutorial.
31/Oct/2002
Lots of random updates today! A bunch of tutorials, fixed the Java tutorial so you can use
Java applets in web browsers, and some other stuff. Some fixes were a result from one Mr.
Chunky Kibbles' critique of my content. I didn't implement all of the fixes he has pointed
out to me, because that will take a long time, and I'm just doing some maintenance at the
moment. Major additions are planned for the future though! I have many new ideas for tutorials.
In fact, I even added two new tutorials today!
I just looked, and my song has had 13 plays. My favorite number! Anyhow, I'm thinking, because a few people have donated some things to me, I'll tribute them and add them to a separate page on here, for recognition. I now have a PayPal account so I could sell things on eBay to get money to buy more Linux games. There were some people who had requested I get a PayPal account so they could donate some money to me. I forget who you were, as I talk to many people every day. So, if you want more information about that, contact me. I got my UT2K3 a while back. I forgot to mention it. It's great! Icculus did a great job porting it. That's enough random comments for today. 21/Oct/2002
I added two contribution tutorials today! One is for setting up the Razer Boomslang mouse,
and the other is a Windows networking tutorial. On top of these, I also made a new tutorial
myself, as an added bonus for my readers, for installing Java. I also added a very nice
link to the Linux games listing article that points to the Linux Games FAQ, hosted at
icculus.org. A very usefull resource. Also, PLG is now open-source.
In other news, my MP3.com page came online the other day. Visit it. 19/Oct/2002
A big shout out to my friend GagnierA, as he has donated UT2003 to me. :) It should get here
next week, I hope. Ordered from TuxGames. Don't expect anymore site updates for a LONG time
once I get this game. Hehe...
Well, I updated a handful of tutorials today, including the Gaim tutorial. I also updated the Linux game list article. I have two tutorials that I will try to add before long that were submitted by a few other people. These tutorials will be untested by me, and your comments on them should be directed at the authors. My apologies that I am lazy and haven't taken the time to format them properly. However, the new Quanta 3.0 sure makes it nicer for formatting documents. 8/Oct/2002
I'm taking a break from the forum scene. I'll be found in #mub on freenode.net, as well as
on my usual chat protocols, if you need to contact me. I'm also available via email, as usual.
Nothing really new today. I updated the Linux Games Listing article, and I added a link to Desktop Mandrake today, and that's really about it. Oh, and it's my friend Vennessa's birthday. So, happy birthday to her. I doubt she's even seen this site, but hey, I'm still gonna say it. I've had an unusual number of requests to donate to me lately. I don't ask for donations, and I love helping for free. But if you want to donate to me, realize that I will be spending that money on Linux anyhow. I'll just buy games for Linux and a Mandrake retail box. So if you insist on donating, you *could* just send me a game or a Mandrake box. Contact me if you insist, so that you don't send me something I've already got. Also, please realize that I am absolutely flattered that some of you actually thought that highly of my work. It's a nice feeling. Thank you. 3/Oct/2002
I added another quick-and-dirty tutorial. I'm getting real lazy. But I think I'm doing them
well enough that people can still follow them... I'm open to comments. The tutorial this time
is for Creative Sound Blaster Live!/5.1/Audigy users. It shows you how to get the bass and
treble controls back, as well as to use the latest OSS driver.
I updated the Flash tutorial too. 28/Sep/2002
As I promised, I have added a new tutorial. It was totally unexpected though, as I was not planning
on buying a scanner until yesterday. My wife and I got a good deal on a refurb Agfa SnapScan e20, so
I forced it to work in Mandrake 9.0, which by the way, is the best distro I've ever used. I won't
be switching, nay, I won't even be downloading Red Hat 8.0. I've read about some recent happenings
with Red Hat, and since I am entitled to my own opinions, I decided that I don't like Red Hat.
I'll try adding the other tutorials that I promised soon. Should I stumble upon a load of extra time, I'll work on all the other tutorials that I've started and never finished because of unknown reasons. 25/Sep/2002
I'd like to thank Knowledge for pointing out to me that DistroWatch has linked to me in the Mandrake
section. That is great news! This site has finally made it big time! This is the best day of my life!
I'd like to thank the following people who made it all possible: Afrosheen. Without your gracious hosting, I'd be nowhere. Mandrake. Your distro is really sweet, and if I ever do part ways, know that my wife won't. She loves the ease of use and is a total newbie when it comes to computers. She doesn't like other distros, but she'd probably like Gentoo because of the logo, but no way will I install that crap on her computer. Heh. No offense to the Gentoo guys. I'm sure it's a wonderful distro, but I'm just not into 24-hour installs. The Online Gurus. The guys on the old MUB, the new MUB, and the possibly future MUB. They have been an endless resource for me, and some of them have become my friends. Some of them don't like me, and I don't blame them. They are all still civil to me anyhow, and they somehow put up with my stupid posts. I apologize to them all publicly and I'm trying to not be a jerk, honestly. I thank them all for helping me and others with their Linux adventure. id Software, icculus.org, Epic. You guys keep pumping out the games! Without you, I'd be bored out of my mind... I'd probably still have a Windows partition on my computer too. I would mention BioWare here too, but hey, I still can't play NWN... My wife. She puts up with my sitting on my computer for My God. Not much to say here. Most of you wouldn't care anyhow. He knows what I think. Thanks to everyone. I feel like this is the peak of my online life... I hope it gets better though. I hope I can handle the fame, and don't commit E-suicide or something... Heh. Take care everyone! Oh yeah, I almost forgot my obligatory promise of NEW TUTORIALS coming SOON. 23/Sep/2002
Mandrake 9.0 FINAL has hit the mirrors! Beware, it's still labelled as RC3, but as long as you get
the ISOs with today's date, then do an md5sum check, you should be fine.
I'm back in school (I graduated and am now a CNT) taking the technologist program, and so I don't have a lot of time, but I do have a few more tutorials planned soon. In the meantime, I updated my contact page and my links page. 13/Sep/2002
Today I added a tutorial for ripping CD audio track to OGG files. This is something I haven't found
a decent GUI for, and as well, the CLi is much better, simplistic, and it Just Works(tm). I did some
other minor updates as well, on some tutorials, games listing, and my links. Look for a couple more
new tutorials shortly.
In gaming news, it looks like UT2003 will be coming out for Linux. This game is added to the list of future Linux games, joining Doom 3, Neverwinter Nights, Majesty, Payback, Hyperspace Delivery Boy, Chronicles, Vendetta, and Atriarch. Things are starting to pick up here. Let's all hope that Transgaming doesn't kill this. 10/Sep/2002
I updated the NVidia tutorial today because of the new NVidia drivers. I mirrored them locally this
time because the NVidia site seems REALLY busy.
31/Aug/2002
I just did a slight update to the Quake/Twilight install tutorial today. I hope that it is
more accurate and not confusing. I also updated a few other minor things and added some links.
25/Aug/2002
The NVidia driver tutorial has been majorly overhauled. It now uses only the command line,
and explains a bit more detail as to why specific procedures are followed.
I added a link to the DeCurs webpage on both the Links page and the white mouse cursor tutorial as well today, and I also added some online indicators to my contact page. 22/Aug/2002
Today I added a new tutorial and RPM for Aliens Versus Predator - Gold Edition. I hope it
works for you, as it works great for me, and I hope you enjoy the game!
As you may have noticed, I also cut down the number of news items on this page to three. It just seems too long to me to have five. If you would rather I change it back, email me. 20/Aug/2002
Transgaming has released three games today, what some would like to call "ports." It got me to
thinking, and I really don't like WineX anymore. I did for a while, until I realized what will
happen to any prospect of native Linux games in the future... There is no way for me or anyone
who shares my thoughts on the matter to show you what you are doing when you settle for WineX
games. I wish we could, before it's too late.
My tutorial will remain here for those of you who want it, but I highly encourage you to not use it for gaming. I can't stress that enough. Maybe someday I'll write an article about why I boycott WineX. We'll see. 14/Aug/2002
A new version of the Flash plugin is uploaded now, so you may want to upgrade it. The tutorial
has been updated. This fixes some security holes, apparently.
Four new entries have been made to the Linux Games Listing. These were partly added because many people have these games and have had good results compiling them from source. One new game that has been added is Tactical Ops: Assault on Terror, which has a Loki installer. General updates to the rest of the games have been done, as well as an update to my distro page. 10/Aug/2002
I added an update to the NVidia tutorial, as well as the WineX tutorial. Don't blame me if
the WineX tutorial isn't right. I don't even test it myself anymore. I use normal Wine so that
if I want to play any OpenGL games, I'll try them there, and they'll actually run near full speed.
I have successfully compiled my own kernel! I did this a while ago, but I didn't add it here, but it has only been about a week or so since I did it. It's great! 2.4.19-preempt is a lot faster than 2.4.18. I love it. 5/Aug/2002
So I had a number of responses from you about the "l337 h4X0rZ" that got to my site.
That's good too, since that was my goal. I wanted to see if this site was worth it
anymore.
So, since a few dozen people contacted me about it, I figure it's worth it to keep the site going. Not that I was gonna quit it, I just wanted reassurance. So, I added a quick tutorial today. It's how to get nice white mouse cursors in Linux. Hope you enjoy it. Also, I updated the XMMS Digital CD audio tutorial. Nothing major though. 22/Jul/2002
Hello again! I am taking a temporary break from my vacation. Yes, sounds strange...
But anyhow, I thought I should add a new tutorial today. My birthday is around the corner,
so if you wanna donate some money to me, feel free. I accept all monetary gifts.
If you didn't know how to do digital CD audio before, then today is your lucky day. Check out the new XMMS tutorial. Also, I fixed a spelling error on my NVidia tutorial. I am considering rewriting the NVidia tutorial so that you can do it all from the console, in case you are locked out of X... Is this a good idea? Email me. 9/Jul/2002
I have now decided to switch from KDE to Blackbox. Don't start flaming me about
how I should use Fluxbox; I tried it. It just isn't as good as Blackbox. Sure,
tabs are nice, but Blackbox just has better software at the moment. That isn't
to say that I won't keep my eyes out for a better version of Fluxbox.
Here is a screenshot of my current desktop.
I would like to thank whoever got MUB-NWN onto Mandrake Forum and PCLInuxOnline today! That was a very welcome surpirise! I didn't even think anyone had noticed that I had made the RPM for NWWine. I hope it works for you all. I have updated my WineX tutorial so the libntdll.so problem is fixed, as well as I added a section about creating your config file. I have updated the MSN tutorial, although it is a little bit late and will most likely need another update in a couple of days. I added a crucial bit to the Unreal Tournament install tutorial regarding the selection of the renderer. Don't know how I missed that. 6/Jul/2002
I have created an RPM of NWWine, and you can find it over at MUB-NWN.
I plan to update my WineX tutorial soon. I added a short rant about AD&D Third Edition rules. But no one will care. I also updated my About page, listing another distro that I tried. 1/Jul/2002
I have been a little busy with playing Neverwinter Nights. Here is a short
update for you Linux guys: The dedicated server is released, but you need
a Windows install to use it. The client should be out soon (I hope). BioWare
is tight-lipped about any release dates, and I don't blame them. If they
say a date, everyone will yell at them if they don't deliver by that time.
Better to just say it's done when it's done. Here is the official MUB-NWN party webpage: MUB-NWN. Sorry there haven't been many new updates, but it's summer, and it's very hot and humid here. I don't feel up to typing stuff out when it is like this. 23/Jun/2002
I haven't done much, just updated the games listing article, as well as the
About page to reflect my most recent distro eXPeriences.
I am trying to start a MUB-NWN party to play Neverwinter Nights. If you post on the MUB, and you wanna be a part, please let me know. Here's the temporary website link: MUB-NWN (NOTE: link removed). 17/Jun/2002
I added an article today that has a list of Linux games, download links, and
links to the websites so you can check for docs and updates. This list contains
only games that can be played using the Windows versions. Enjoy!
14/Jun/2002
Well, a big special thanks goes out to JAMES_THE_TROLL* for telling me to move
the "cd /etc/" command to a different location in my ADSL tutorial (of course,
he did it in about 4 paragraphs instead of one sentance, but that's because
he's really l337). So now the cat/grep combo will actually work.
* - Name has been changed to protect identity. 11/Jun/2002
Today something really dumb happened so I just had to write about it. At the
same time I added another article, this time about Quebec and it's desire to
become a separate country. Gee, could I get any more off-topic?
9/Jun/2002
Well, I added a new section to this site - ARTICLES. It is just a place
where I can run my mouth, and you can too, if you submit your articles to
me in a readable format, and make it legible, and it is interesting to read.
I am working on a tutorial for MAME - the arcade machine emulator. It covers installing the RPMs, installing ROMs, and setting up QMameCat. 26/May/2002
I updated both the gamepad and the Unreal Tournament tutorials.
24/May/2002 (later that afternoon)
I recently reinstalled Mandrake 8.2 onto my computer, and I decided to try out
my WineX tutorial. I discovered that I had that old problem of the missing GLU.H
file. I have now updated the tutorial with a workaround for this problem. To my
knowledge, this only works with NVidia systems. But I could be wrong.
24/May/2002 (later that morning)
I added the gamepad tutorial that I mentioned earlier today. If you want to help
me out, please do so and submit to me the correct modules names along with the
correct device names, and I can add them. If I get enough names, I will add a table
to the tutorial page.
24/May/2002
Today I revised the NVidia tutorial because new NVidia drivers were released.
Also, I added a link and I also added a couple more distros to my ever-growing list of distros I have tried. Future: I plan to add new tutorials such as how to get your joystick to work, namely the Interact Hammerhead FX, and the Microsoft Sidewinder gamepads. Also, I would like to add a tutorial on how to use a Logitech Quickcam USB, but I have yet to make it work myself. If you know what I am supposed to do, please email me. Frozen-Bubble 0.9.3 has been released, as well as a new demo version for users of "sucking operating systems such as Windows." I tried it out and it works nicely! However, I still think that adding joystick support to this game would make it the best it can ever be... If you feel the same, please contact them and let them know. 19/May/2002
I updated the WineX tutorial AGAIN. This time I added some parameters that will help
to reduce the size of the binaries produced. Also, a newer method to build it is
included, in order to take advantage of the optimizations. Please contact me if it
doesn't work.
Also, I updated the Gaim/MSN tutorial. In other news, it turns out that my attempted partnership with Sisob fell apart was good afterall, as he has now switched over to SuSE Linux. He still has great tutorials there, so I will keep the links on my site, however, he is no longer in the Mandrake section on my Links page. 18/May/2002
I think I got WineX CVS tutorial to work properly again with Mandrake 8.2. Silly me
had to read the README file to figure out the problem. I guess my instructor was
onto something when he kept chanting "Read the readme... Read the help file...
Read the readme... Read the help file..." Please contact me if it does or doesn't
work for you.
More good news is that I got in contact with Kngtbrd of the Twilight project, and he has approved of me leaving my tutorial on my site. I may even end up being the one to supply RPMs for them officially. Who knows what can happen. 14/May/2002
Idiot me forgot a crucial part of my NVidia tutorial... I fixed that, fixed a small
version info on my about page, and I added a link or two to my links page.
11/May/2002
I updated the NVidia driver tutorial to reflect the "preferred" way of rebuilding
SRC.RPMs now.
I am patiently awaiting the new version of Gaim. My tutorial will be silently updated when Gaim 0.58 is released. 9/May/2002 (later that day)
Well, I added a tutorial on getting Quake to work. Please note that the permanency of
this tutorial is based on whether or not I get official permission to post RPMs on my
site. If I find out that I am not allowed to keep my RPM up there, then I will possibly
replace the tutorial with instructions on how to build it from source, which will make
the process a lot longer and dirtier. Alternately, I do have permission to post a Quake
tutorial/RPM for a different Quake engine, although I did not manage to get sound to
work using it.
I also added some good links to my Links page, as well as updated my About and Contact pages. Look for a new Articles section fairly soon, if all goes well. Also, I can usually be contacted in my #mdkxp channel on irc.openprojects.net, if that is your thing. 4/May/2002 (later that day)
You remember that massive update I was planning? Well, I did it. It might not look like
much to you, but that's because you aren't the one editing the source code. Trust me.
It is going to be much easier to update my menus, logos, and background images from now
on. I experimented with new logos and new backgrounds, but I only slightly changed the
background. The logo just didn't fit.
4/May/2002
Well, I got DSL finally! And it is running beautifully in Mandrake. I added a tutorial on how
to get Mandrake to automatically connect using PPPoE during bootup. Try it and let me know
if it works for you.
I also updated the Gaim tutorial. Please note that the Gaim developers work quickly, and my tutorial will go out of date quickly. That is to say that my links will go out of date quickly. They try to release a new version every two weeks, and Texstar usually updates his RPMs shortly thereafter. I have been debating whether I should announce each change, or just update the tutorial silently. I will probably do the latter. I am also working on getting the original Quake to work, and I have a few extra tutorials that are partly finished for other games. If I ever decide to work on them again, then I should be able to add a couple more tutorials. However, the tutorial for Quake will be out first, I am sure. In other news, I think I can get the CVS version of WineX to work... I haven't tried in the last few days, but some people have reported that my tutorial works even for Mandrake 8.2 now. Not sure why... But I may create an RPM for the CVS version. I have done it, but I had one snag, and that is with the library path, so if that gets fixed, or is fixed, then expect a build soon. Egoboo 2.30 is supposed to be released soon. WebDownloader for X 2.0 is out and it is really sweet. I am thinking that if I get time this weekend, I may begin reconstruction of my site. If so, don't expect me to update for roughly a week, maybe more, depending on how lazy I am. I will try to post an update to inform you of what I am doing though. 1/May/2002
Well, I haven't had much time again lately. I am busy building 8031 minimum systems in school,
and I have homework now... Weird...
Only one real update, and that is that I updated the link to the Mandrake User Board, because it is switched over as of May. The old board is still there and will remain in read-only form for about a month. In other news, I hope to be updating the WineX tutorial soon, as I believe I have found out how to get it to work properly in Mandrake 8.2. However, if you are still in Mandrake 8.1, I have had reports that it still works perfectly, so that is good. I don't know what Mandrake has gone off and changed in 8.2, but I sure wish they hadn't. Also, I am considering reworking my graphics for this site. The layout will stay the same pretty much, but I am also looking at simplifying my update process by incorporating a lot of PHP stuff. So stay tuned to that, as I might even hold a poll asking what logo is the best. Of course, I have a design that I liked for the new Mandrake User Board, but I don't think it is going to be used, so I may use that basic design for here. Any objections? Email me. Look for an Articles section soon too, if I undergo a redesign. I took some time last weekend to write myself a PHP script that runs every ten minutes and creates a webpage containing my IP, and then connects to an FTP server, and uploads the HTML file. If you would like the source, it is GPL. Get it here. I am not 100% sure of this, but my gracious host, Afrosheen, had been talking about moving our websites to a newer server, and I think that he has done it. Not too too sure, so don't take my word for it. But if you noticed, this site was down for a brief while, and the uptime has been knocked back down to Windows-level. So my guess is... 21/Apr/2002
I have uploaded my WineX spreadsheet. If you would like to see it, get the
OpenOffice version
or the
HTML version
or the
Excel version.
If you would like a different format on here, email me.

Well, I added a new short tutorial. Sometimes people kill their taskbar by accident, or sometimes
it locks up on them. This brief document will tell them how to fix it.
18/Apr/2002
For nearly a month I have had an RPM on my site with no link to it. It was there only for me, but
after a chat in IRC last night, someone called me "useful" *blush*. So, I wrote up a short tutorial
and put a link there, so everyone can download it! Check out the tutorial section if you need to get
the Flash plugin working.
17/Apr/2002
Biggest news of the day - WineX 2.0 is released!
I still would like more people to fill out my survey, so if you haven't already, please do so. I added a new tutorial! It is for those who don't know how to setup Gaim, and would like to chat on the MSN network while using the best operating system available. 15/Apr/2002
Hey all! This weekend has sucked big time, seeing as how Mandrake User Online's forum
was down, and still is down. And to top it all off, Transgaming STILL hasn't released
WineX 2.0. Come on!!! At least I had my PHP to keep me company...
Anyway, I have an assignment to do for my statistics class, and I would greatly appreciate anyone to fill it out. My topic is the SSSCA and the CBDTPA, so seeing as how many of my readers (this means you) most likely use computers (go figure) then your opinions are quite valuable to me. The URL is: (NOTE: link removed). 12/Apr/2002 (slightly later that day)
Well, since sisob has gone and changed his site name (originally my suggestion, if
I remember corrctly. Well, if not, I am claiming credit for it now.) so I had to
update my links to his page.
My list of Linux distros and alternate OSes that I have tried has been updated to include the sucky Lycoris, as well as MaxOS Linux. Also, I added a new section to the bottom of this page, which allows you to see when the last time the server I am hosted on was rebooted. Should prove interesting. I am working (slowly) on a few new tutorials, namely involving games like RtCW, Quake 3 Arena, and Soldier of Fortune. Finally, I updated the NVidia tutorial to point to the newest drivers, and to fix one small typo which would have thrown anyone for a loop who didn't know what the heck to do. 12/Apr/2002
At the request of Inundata:
This page is updated! That's right! I updated the page! What did I update, you ask? Well, I added this bit of news... 28/Mar/2002
I will be gone for Easter weekend to visit my family. The site has been updated
once again with a quick and dirty tutorial for using Lexar Media USB Compact Flash
card readers. Hope it works for you all! I did kinda rush it.
In other news, add two more users to the Linux family! My sisters have agreed to let me install Mandrake 8.2 onto their computer and abolish Windows. This is exciting news for me, and is (will be) one of those success stories that people like to read about. 26/Mar/2002
Well, I am starting to learn PHP, so I hope to add some cool stuff to this site,
such as polls and contact forms, but don't look for this within the next couple
months, as I just started learning it today. I have Apache setup at home, and I
am starting to mess around with it. It's great fun! The joys of using Linux!
In other news, The Mandrake eXPerience has gained a sister site! sisob's linux eXPlorations (NOTE: link removed) came online today! This site is a direct result of my pickiness, and I hope that it never happens again! While my site focuses primarily on Mandrake, there will be no Gnome-specific tutorials, as I don't have the time to use it as much as I use KDE. Sisob doesn't use KDE, so this is where the two sites intertwine. We will both have general tutorials, some of which may be the same or even similar, but where I will have some tutorials that focus on the K Desktop Environment, he will be providing Gnome tutorials, and we will both link to each other on out tutorials pages. Of course this means that I will not be gaining some of the content that I was excited about earlier this month, however, I should be having more free time to work on this site. On top of this, I encourage anyone to either request or submit tutorials for this site. 23/Mar/2002 (even later that day)
I added two more tutorials (can you tell that I have been busy?). One is for
NVidia drivers, the other is for fixing the Trash icon on the KDE desktop.
I think I won't be updating much else on here for tonight. I am hungry and tired, and on top of that, I am sick, and I have an assignment for class due by midnight tonight... So, enjoy the new stuff. 23/Mar/2002 (later that day)
I added an archived news section at the bottom of this page. That means that this
page will load much quicker, and it looks nicer. I have been wanting to do this
for quite some time, but I haven't had the time. Now I do, even if for only a short
time. I also had a request to make this page shorter, so here it is!
More cosmetic changes are coming too! Today is my day to improve this site! 23/Mar/2002
Hehe... Finally got a counter working. I have no clue how it works though, but
that's probably because I didn't look really closely at the source code.
Thanks Inundata!!! I love all you guys that have helped and are helping me with this site... It gets better and better every day, week, month... !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! 22/Mar/2002
Now that my site is back online, I actually was able to upload the updates.
Read the last news article to see what's new.
17/Mar/2002
Well, I had some ideas on a new website design thrown my way from Sisob.
So, you can thank him that you can now read my site easily. He is also
working on a few tutorials, and I should be able to add them to the site
fairly soon.
I still can't figure out how to make my own stupid CGI counter... I got the script written, but I don't know what to do with it now... I have a general idea of how to implement it into my HTML code, but I don't understand this stuff... I guess I'll just have to wait for my Client-Server teacher to show us how to do that. Unless, of course, someone wants to make up a tutorial that I can add to this site... I'll even test it to make sure that it works! 14/Mar/2002
Not much new with me, but I have been getting some nice responses from some
people. This *should* mean that I can start adding some good content, such as
new and more tutorials. I am looking at making a new section for articles for
those who want to vent, a guestbook, a counter, and an archive section of all
my past news updates, in case anyone is really bored. So, until then, I have
nothing new to say, except that I updated the tutorial listing page with a
correction - the person who helped with the WineX tutorial was not Some
Other Guy, but was Sisob. Expect to see more from him in the future on this
site. Hopefully a kernel tutorial. Also, I am probably gonna work on that
promised Squid tutorial soon... Or maybe not. We'll see.
12/Mar/2002
Wow! I finally updated the site!
That's right, we're back online. In case some of you didn't know, during our downtime, you could search for us on Google, as they cache pages, which is really cool, and you could still read the tutorials. I tried it. It worked. I am starting (FINALLY) to get some submissions from some people, and I will be adding them as they arrive. This past semester was very busy, and I got pretty involved in IRC in my spare time so this site had to suffer because of it. Sad to say that I am constantly being disappointed by people who sit around and compain and crack jokes about Microsoft, BSODs, DLLs, illegal operations, and so forth. If you wanna whine and moan about Windows and how much you think it sucks, then DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT. With the recent threats from Microsoft about withdrawing Windows from the market entirely, you may not have a choice in the near future. I pray for that day. I am willing to bet that Microsoft is only bluffing on this one, though, which, will make them not only crooks, but liars, if the next court ruling is against them. We shall soon see. I changed some links, added some, fixed some. Check 'em out. I got Internet Explorer 6 to run under Linux. Check it out here. I added a chart of the different non-Microsoft OSes that I have tried over the last 3 or 4 years, and I will update it as I try new distros and remember the versions that I have listed as unknown. I updated some tutorials (Console Commands, WineX) and I added a few more: Fixing Broken Drive Icons, and Extracting Archives. Oh, and for those of you who are trying to follow the WineX tutorial, FOLLOW IT!! You need to have CVS installed, just like it says. If you get to a point in the tutorial where it isn't working, you should have been following it FROM THE BEGINNING. Now, with that said, near the end of the tutorial, it gets a little bit fuzzy, since some people have troubles running wineinstall as their user. If anyone knows why this is happening, feel free to mail me. 31/Jan/2002
Well, I updated the WineX tutorial. If you try it out, and it works, great,
if not, that sucks. Email me about it, and we'll get your problem (or my
problem) fixed. Oh, and a nifty tip I found out about is this: To start
another X session in another terminal, go to another terminal and type in:
startx -- :1 vt8 and hit Enter. This creates another session
in virtual terminal number 8. Cool stuff! And, I added a really nice link,
courtesy of the guru himself. Oh, and try the newer RpmDrake from Tex...
It's so fast!
27/Jan/2002
What's up with that? No updates in like two weeks? Yeah, sorry about that.
I added a few links to my link page, in case you want to check that out.
I plan on getting a new tutorial up soon too. I also have to make some changes
to an existing tutorial or two, since some of you have written in with additional
information. Thanks everyone!
10/Jan/2002
Hey Erik Harrison, this really IS my page!!!
8/Jan/2002
Happy birthday, Samba! That's right, Samba has just turned 10. One of the best
pieces of software available, IMHO.
I updated my links page. I added some links to some great software. This is my new place to list my favorite programs, so make sure you check it out. If you know any software that is better than what I list, please email me. 7/Jan/2002
Well, I got it working just fine. I now actually understand how Samba works,
good enough to write a quick and dirty tutorial for simple file and print
sharing. Hopefully I will get some time soon to type this up.
6/Jan/2002
Well, I have been messing around with my network at home, and I am in need of help.
I got my Samba shares working great, on one PC. On the other, however, it isn't
co-operating as well.
On 192.0.0.1 (Dana) LinNeighborhood gives me this listing:
![]() This PC has no probs reading and writing to that share that is mounted. So... I checked my Samba config files, and the shares seem to be set up the same. I am at a loss... I don't know what to do. I even bought a book called Samba - Unix and NT Internetworking, but it doesn't describe the error I am getting, as far as I can tell.
On 192.0.0.2 (Sarah) LinNeighborhood gives me this listing:
![]() But when I try to mount the share from 192.0.0.1, I get this: ![]() It is weird... So, please email me if you know what I can do. Oh, my tutorial for proxies is on the way. Shouldn't be too long now. 2/Jan/2002
Happy new year.
I am happy. I just got married to my high school sweetheart on the 29th of December. I am 20, and she is 19. No, we are not too young to get married. But thanks for asking. Oh, and feel free to submit stuff... 19/Dec/2001
Well, sorry guys, but I skipped over the Squid/AnalogX tutorial for a brief
moment, as the WineX tutorial needed some attention. It is uploaded now, and
you can check it out. I hope that it is good, and that I don't need to change
it too much. I can now focus on the proxy tutorial, so it will be here soon.
Oh, and feel free to submit stuff... 18/Dec/2001
Well, I fixed some of the problems with the Linux browsers, just not all of the
problems that Konqueror has with CSS scripts, since I don't know how to do that.
I have started the AnalogX/Squid tutorial, so hold on tight, it should be up soon.
17/Dec/2001
WineX is working great. I am going to be adding a couple more tutorials soon, when
I get some time. One will be getting WineX to work, and the other will be using
Squid as you would use AnalogX. In the meantime, take my word for it, WineX is
bringing games to Linux like you wouldn't believe! Check this
screenshot
of American McGee's Alice, for instance.
I finally uploaded and converted everything. I hope everyone likes the new design! There are a few minor adjustments that I need to make, such as transparency on the tutorial badge, and a few colors here and there, but I am getting really tired tonight. I also modified a few tutorials, so you can check those out too. 16/Dec/2001
Well, it turns out that my acquaintance did not want to conform the new site
design to my specifications, so I have taken the liberty to simply change the
site a little bit myself.
I would like to extend a special thanks to Afrosheen from the MUB, as he has graciously given me my own space on his Linux webserver. This is awesome, and I will never go back to Geocities. No more popups!!! Woo hoo!!! Thanks man! 6/Dec/2001 - 15/Dec/2001
***NOTE: I don't know if there was any news in here. I looked through my
hard drives, but I couldn't find any more news in this section. If I do
find it, then I will be sure to add it here and add an announcement on the
front page.
5/Dec/2001 (later that day)
I fixed a link to the Quick Console Commands tutorial, and I have also noticed
that the Last Modified date/time of each page is not accurate... I will
fix that soon, just bear with me, and ignore that for now. I certainly don't
have time to update every page two seconds before you view them!
5/Dec/2001
Last night I finally got Squid working! I couldn't believe how easy it was...
I also was talking to Eric (developer of Gaim plugins) and he helped me get
Squid working with Gaim through the HTTP proxy. Many thanks to him, and thanks
to the entire development team for a great app! Sure beats waiting for Trillian
to be ported and bug-free! I ain't looking back, that's for sure! I will have a
new tutorial for this setup soon, so be patient, I am in school full-time and
am about to get married, so my time is kinda taken...
3/Dec/2001 (later that day)
Well, I just thought I'd update the status on WineX. I GOT IT TO WORK!!!
Here
is a screenshot for anyone who's skeptical, as I was at first, since I have never
been successful in the past.
3/Dec/2001
Well, I finally got a couple of tutorials up here, and I also added a better
site navigation tool. The first few tutorials are: Installing Unreal Tournament
GOTY Edition, Benchmarking Your Hard Drive, and Resetting the Root Password.
I finished my 12-hour exam, and then I had to pack my stuff for a move. My new place is quite nice, compared to what we had before, and for the same price! So anyway, point is, our phone is not connected yet, so I don't have the internet hooked up while I write this, which could be why I had found the time to update the page... Hmm... I need to find a better reason to update a webpage. 27/Nov/2001
That's right, I said eXPerience... That's because I tell people that
I run Windows 98 and Mandrake XP... That really throws them off.
Anyway, this is my website dedicated to my Mandrake eXPerience, in case
you couldn't tell by the title.
I will have [hopefully] helpful information on this site in the very near future, and if you help me out, then I can make it better. A lot of the information I post here will originate from either my own personal eXPerience with Mandrake, or will have originated at the Mandrake User Board (a very nice and helpful community, indeed).
Here is a picture of some fake transparency, for you guys on the MUB:
![]() See what I mean? Part of the Tools menu is still showing... That is bad. Check back often, as I plan on doing a ton of work here, whenever I get any spare time. I find myself messing around in Linux so much that most of my free time is gone on that. But, I have done some work, as you may be able to tell. |
